Who the heck is that guy with the trumpet!

Who the heck is that guy with the trumpet?

The year 2001 - a space cadet odessey.  We did a couple Splintered Sunlight shows to start the year off right.  Then Dead Night was revived at Patriots, and shortly thereafter moved to the Firehouse Grille (the same place that used to be called Crossroads) and renamed to Homegrown Music Night.  Strangely enough former member of the Grateful Dead, Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay and her husband David MacKay decided to drop in for a visit and hang out one night in June!  That was a nice surprise fer sure.

Dead Night Lives Again!

Dead Night on Tuesday nights at Patriots Cafe in Fairfax was revived in March or thereabouts.   May 21st however was the last Dead Night at Patriots.  It had become a fixture after several years, but it was time for a change.

Good things like this just can't be stopped though.  Starting the next Tuesday, May 28th, Dead Night was moved to the Firehouse Grill on Main St.  Strangely enough, Firehouse is the same venue that used to be called Crossroads where Dead Night started before being moved to Patriots.

A close encounter of the Donna Jean kind

It gets even stranger  (it always does) - no sooner did Dead Night get renamed to Homegrown Music Night, than former member of the Grateful Dead, Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay and her husband David MacKay decided to drop in for a visit and hang out with us.  This happenned on June 19th.

We were surprised to say the least.  Donna and David were in Fairfax for their nephew's high school graduation.  They saw one of the flyers in the window and decided to stop by and hang out for a bit.  It was pretty cool because there were just a few of us there and they stayed for a while.  It was very nice talking to them about what they are up to nowadays as well as the old days.  Donna told us about recording with Elvis, her first appearances on stage with the Dead, as well as telling us all about her song "Sunrise".

Donna said she had just been listening to Live Dead the other day and the one recording that really impressed her quite a lot was One From The Vault.   When someone asked about the second night of some run of shows in 1978, she just laughed and said it was all a blur. She told us how funny it was that Deadheads would know more about the Dead that she does and correct her sometimes on some fact about the band.  Donna was a very funny, almost silly person.  She would use phrases like "totally whacked" and kept us laughing with her stories.

Very cool indeed!
